Nüssli builds a theater in Kassel

Hüttwilen/Kassel - Nüssli has been commissioned to build an interim venue for the Kassel State Theater. The multifunctional building will be used while the theater’s main auditorium undergoes a period of renovation.

Kassel is one of the German cities that has had a permanent theater building for many years. It has now become necessary to renovate the Staatstheater’s main auditorium from the 2025/2026 season. The state of Hesse and city of Kassel have commissioned Nüssli, a provider of event and construction services based in Hüttwilen in the Swiss canton of Thurgau, to build an interim venue for the theater. As a press release explains, the planned building will have a versatile, multifunctional design that can be adapted to different types of events. According to the press release, Nüssli’s wealth of experience will enable it to integrate state-of-the-art stage technology, acoustics and technical building equipment into the construction.

The project builder and investor is the Gemeinnützige Wohnungsbaugesellschaft der Stadt Kassel mbH (GWG). The GWG has commissioned Nüssli as general contractor to build the interim venue. The outer shell and steel structure should be completed by the end of the year, and the interior fit-out will start in January 2025. If the project runs according to schedule, the State Theater will move into the new building in fall this year, in time for the 2025/26 season. The time for which the temporary theater is used will depend on how long it takes to renovate the main auditorium; a period of five years has been planned in for now. ce/ww
